Author-Interview with Paul Fabella by Blaze Goldburst

Welcome to another captivating blog of the Blaze Goldburst Blog Author Interview, where we explore the minds behind some of today’s most intriguing books. I’m Blaze Goldburst, and today, we have the pleasure of speaking with the talented author Paul Fabella about his latest release, “Thy Birthright,” now available on Amazon. Paul, it’s wonderful to have you with us today!

1. “Thy Birthright: Foreshadowing” presents a gripping dystopian world where eternal youth leads to humanity’s downfall. What was the defining moment that sparked the idea for this story?

I’ve always been fascinated by science—especially breakthroughs in astronomy, biotechnology, and medical research. Lately, I’ve been diving into studies on telomeres and cellular degeneration. One professor proposed a theory that, in the future, we might be able to hack our DNA to stop telomere shortening—the main cause of aging. That idea stuck with me and sparked a whole new world in my mind.

What if science actually cracked the code to staying young and living longer? Sounds incredible, right? But nothing comes without a cost. To balance the pros and cons of immortality, I considered the biggest consequence: overpopulation. If people stopped dying of old age, what would happen next? Food shortages, overcrowded cities, rising crime—society as we know it would start to collapse.

And then I took it a step further. What if the miracle serum that keeps people young had a terrifying side effect? A mutation that could turn them into something… inhuman. Mindless. Violent. Deadly. That’s how the world of Thy Birthright was born.

2. Your book raises deep ethical and societal questions—control over life, morality, and survival. What message do you want readers to take away from Samantha’s journey?

The challenge of overpopulation is not a new issue. In some countries, rapid urban expansion has led to extreme population density, prompting governments to implement strict regulations, such as the One Child Policy, to control growth. Regardless of religious or personal beliefs, the value of life within the womb is deeply significant, and the ethical implications of terminating that life remain a topic of intense debate.

In Thy Birthright, Samantha refuses to comply with laws shaped by corruption and corporate greed, risking everything to protect her unborn child. Her resilience as a woman and as a mother, her unwavering defiance, is what makes the Population Control Task Force relentless in their pursuit.

I’d like to tickle the readers’ minds with this question:  If given the opportunity to extend your life by over 80+ years—but at the cost of never having children—would you take it?

3. As an author, how do you craft suspense and emotional depth in a dystopian thriller like this? Were there any real-life events or philosophies that influenced your writing?

In a dystopian thriller like Thy Birthright, crafting suspense and emotional depth requires a careful balance between high-stakes tension and deeply personal character moments. Suspense, for me, isn’t just about action sequences or shocking twists—it’s about uncertainty, dread, and the fear of the unknown. I build that by putting my characters in morally complex situations where survival isn’t just about avoiding death, but about making impossible choices that weigh on their conscience.

Emotional depth comes from grounding the story in human struggles that readers can connect with. Samantha, for example, isn’t just running from an oppressive government—she’s fighting for her child’s right to exist. That maternal instinct, that desperate need to protect despite overwhelming odds, is something universally understood. I let readers sit with her fears, her hopes, and her pain, making every decision feel personal.

When it comes to pacing and balancing suspense, I actually draw inspiration from my experience in game design—specifically, the difficulty curve in level design. In a game, players start with a period of exploration, gradually facing increasing challenges, until they reach the boss level where the tension peaks. Afterward, the intensity drops, giving them space to recover before the next challenge. I apply the same principle in my storytelling. I allow readers to absorb the world and connect with the characters before increasing the stakes, leading them through moments of action and high tension, then pulling back to quieter, more introspective scenes. This rhythm ensures that the suspense feels natural and doesn’t overwhelm, while also giving emotional moments the space to truly resonate.

Ultimately, a dystopian thriller works best when it keeps the audience questioning: What would I do in this situation? That’s how I pull them into the world—not just as observers, but as participants.

4. The concept of the immortality serum turning people into violent creatures adds a thrilling horror element. How did you balance dystopian themes with action and suspense to keep readers engaged?

The biggest twist of irony in this story could be seen in how ReGen Essence, a serum originally designed to extend life and prevent aging, ultimately becomes the catalyst for mass death and destruction. The very thing meant to grant immortality ends up dooming humanity, turning people into violent, infected creatures instead.

Balancing dystopian themes with action and suspense is all about maintaining the right rhythm. The dystopian backdrop—oppressive laws, corporate greed, and a crumbling society—sets the stakes, but it’s the characters’ struggles, the chase sequences, and the unpredictable dangers that keep the reader turning pages.

I approach this as a Game Designer. There are moments of quiet exploration where the world’s horrors sink in, followed by rising tension as conflicts escalate, leading to high-intensity action sequences—the ‘boss fights’ of the story. But after those peaks, I bring the tension back down, giving readers a chance to breathe before the next wave of suspense. This ebb and flow ensures that the emotional weight of the dystopian setting never overwhelms the excitement of the story.

At its core, Thy Birthright isn’t just about survival—it’s about fighting for what’s right, even in a world designed to break you. The mix of world-building, character stakes, and adrenaline-pumping action keeps that struggle engaging from start to finish.

5. If Thy Birthright were adapted into a blockbuster film, what would be your dream cast, and how would you envision the cinematic experience?

Here are some casting choices

Woody Harrelson (Zombieland) as Agent Howard

Lana Condor (X-Men Apocalypse) as Samantha Lee

Park Solomon (All of us are dead) as Saul Keene

Gong Yoo (Squid Game) as Tony Velasco

Cara Delevigne as Natasha
